WWF Living Planet Report 2020: 84% collapse in freshwater species since 1970

Heron

There has been an 84% collapse in freshwater species since 1970, the WWF has reported.

The WWF has reported this information in their new 'Living Planet Report' 2020. The Living Planet Report is now published every two years from the WWF. It is a way to analyze and gather data about the world's animals and ecosystems.

In the Living Planet Report 2020, the WWF has reported that 68% of animal populations have declined since 1970 - that is an average of the animal populations that they studied.

Some of the animals the WWF studied were freshwater species. The WWF has found that there has been a significant decline in freshwater species since 1970 - that decline is by 84%.

There has also been a decline in wetlands across the world. That is significant, as wetlands are very important to the survival of freshwater species. Freshwater species rely on ecosystems like wetlands to survive.
