There is good news, as wildcats could be returning to South-West England.
The news has been announced by the Devon Wildlife Trust.
The Devon Wildlife Trust is looking to appoint their first Wildcat Project Officer.
This is exciting news, and could result in the return of wildcats in the South-West of England for the first time in 100 years.
The History Of Wildcats
Currently, the only wildcats left in the UK exist in the Scottish highlands, they are critically endangered and known as Scottish wildcats.
Scottish wildcats were once found throughout Scotland, England and Wales. Today, they are known as Scottish wildcats, however, they are all the same species of cat.
The wildcats went extinct in England and Wales around the late Victorian era, and then almost went extinct in Scotland around the time of the First World War. To this day, they are extinct throughout most of the places in Scotland they once roamed, due to being hunted and having their forests destroyed by humans - the same happened in England and Wales.
Now there is an effort to try and reverse that, by reintroducing these beautiful cats back into England - it would be amazing to see wildcats once again roam in England (and in Wales, and the rest of Scotland).
Rewilding like this - reintroducing wildcats were they once were - is important in addressing the the biodiversity crisis and climate change, we need a healthy and thriving natural world to have a healthy environment.
Hopefully, in the near future, we will see wildcats being reintroduced in England. 🐾
