UK gardens are full of lots of different species of birds.
There is a wide variety of beautiful, cute and interesting birds that we share our gardens with. Each species of bird has their own different appearance, their own personality and their own calls and songs.
Listening out for a bird call, or their song, can help you identify which species of bird you are listening to. For example, blackbirds have their own distinct calls and song. You can hear the blackbirds beautiful song before and when the sun is setting.
You can also identify birds by how they look.
Let's look at some of the most common species of bird that you will find in your garden in the UK - there are lots of beautiful bird species to admire.
Starlings
Starlings are cute and charismatic birds.
You will usually see starlings in a large group of other starlings.
When they are young, starlings are a light brown colour, but as they mature into adults, these beautiful birds have black feathers, with white dots and some purple and green feathers. They have purple and green feathers that become more noticeable when the sun is shining on them. Summertime is a great time to spot their green and purple feathers, as the sun makes their feathers more noticeable.
You can see on trees, feeders, fences and feeding on the ground.
Magpies
Magpies are another charismatic bird that is found in our gardens.
These beautiful big birds love to chat to each other, and are very intelligent birds. They also have their own calls; like all other birds.
Magpies are also easy to identify. They have mainly black and white feathers, with some blue and green feathers also.
Magpies are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. You can find them feeding on the ground, in trees and on fences.
Collared Doves
Collared doves are a peaceful bird that are found in British gardens.
These beautiful birds are a white and grey colour, with a black line on the back of their necks. Collared doves are lovebirds, and are usually found in pairs.
They can also have several baby doves every year.
You can find collared doves sitting on fences, but they are ground feeders, so, if you are looking to see these beautiful birds, you'll find them eating on the ground.
Blackbirds
Blackbirds are another beautiful bird to look out for in the garden.
Both the male and female blackbirds are the same shape, however, the male and female blackbird look different in another way.
The female blackbird is all brown, while the male blackbird is all black. The male blackbird also has a yellow beak and yellow circles round their eyes.
You can find blackbirds hoping around the ground forging for food.
Blue Tits
Blue tits are cute little birds that can usually be seen in trees or garden feeders.
These cute little birds are perhaps the most colourful bird that comes into our gardens, as they have yellow, blue, green, white and black feathers.
Blue tits are also noticeable with their calls. Blue tits have chirping sounds and they also have trill sounds, which makes these cute birds easy to identify.

Great Tits
Great tits are similar to blue tits, so it can be easy to mistake them from a distance.
One of the best ways to tell the difference between the great tit and the blue tit is the size of both birds - great tits are a bit bigger than blue tits.
Great tits also have no blue feathers, Instead, their feathers are mostly yellow and green, with some black and white feathers too. These beautiful birds can also usually be found in our gardens in places like trees or bird feeders.
House Sparrows
House sparrows are cute little birds that you can also find in your garden.
Sometimes house sparrows can be seen on their own and they are usually quiet. While at other times they can be seen in groups, were they are noiser.
These cute little birds are charismatic and full of life. They can be found on trees, fences, bird feeders and forging for food on the ground.
Woodpigeons
Woodpigeons are a curious birds, and one of the largest that come into our gardens.
Woodpigeons are not like any other birds that come into the garden, they are quite unique. These beautiful birds are purplish and different shades of grey and white.
Woodpigeons also have a unique call and sound, when you hear a woodpigeon you will know its them. Woodpigeons are usually found on the ground looking for food, or are found sitting on a fence relaxing.
