UK Government Introduces New Law To Help The World's Rainforests

Baby Orangutan Rainforest

The UK government has introduced a new 'world-leading' law which is aimed at helping the world's rainforests.

It will help the world's rainforests by tackling illegal deforestation.

How Will This Law Tackle Illegal Deforestation?

This law will help to tackle illegal deforestation by establishing a new law which helps to protect the rainforests. The law will protect the rainforests by monitoring the UK's 'supply chains'. Monitoring the supply chains in the UK will ensure our products in the UK aren't coming from sources which have caused illegal deforestation.

The law would require that businesses source their products more ethically and sustainably. This would mean that businesses based in the UK couldn't use products that came from illegally deforested land. This would protect rainforests as if people aren't gaining money from illegal deforestation, then, it gives people less of an incentive to destroy the rainforests and cause deforestation.

Any business that doesn't comply with this new law and the new protections being put in place would be fined.

What Sorts Of Products Can Come From Rainforests?

There are many different products that we all consume daily that come from rainforest land which has been deforested.

These products can be found in our homes.

They are products which include toiletries and food. One of the major products that we all consume that come from rainforest land that has been destroyed, is - palm oil.

Palm oil is found in tonnes of products that we use. These products include everything from crisps, butter and even lipsticks.

Our massive demand for things like palm oil is a major contributor to deforestation. For example, rainforests in Indonesia are destroyed and the land is cleared to make way for palm oil plantations. These palm oil plantations grow the palm oil which is used in much of our products - like the crisps, lipsticks and butter.

Protecting The Rainforests

By stopping illegal deforestation, we can save the world's last remaining rainforests for future generations.

Saving these forests gives spaces for animals to live in the world. It also helps us to preserve beautiful endangered species and gorgeous ecosystems which have been on the earth for millions of years. Plus, by keeping the rainforests standing, they help to prevent climate change and give us a healthy environment which is beneficial to us all - both animals and people.

The world's natural treasures like the rainforests are a touch of magic in the world.
