Autumn is the most beautiful and interesting season of the year!
It is a time where there are many different colours of leaves on the trees - from reds, yellows, and light browns, which creates some beautiful and stunning scenery.
It is also a time where leaves are falling from the trees like snow falls from the skies, this also creates beautiful scenery, especially when you walk through forests and woodlands during the Autumn months.
Autumn is a unique time of year, both for the scenery that it gives us, and for the animal behaviour that it gives us. A lot of the behaviour from wildlife during the Autumn is only seen during the Autumn months.
There are many unique behaviours that animals display at this time of year.
Let us look at some of the amazing things that wildlife gets up to in Autumn!
5 Deer Ruts
Deer rutting is one of the animal kingdoms most unique events to happen in the UK.
Deer rutting happens during the deers mating season, the deer rutting takes place in the UK from late September to early November. Rutting mostly happens in October. It is an event that only happens during the Autumn months for deers in the UK.
The deer ruts are where male deers (also known as stags), compete with each other for mates (which are female deers; the female deers are known as does). When the males win, they will start mating with the female deers.
This doesn't happen with all deer species in the UK, as roe deers will mate during the summer months. Rutting happens with species of deer like the red deer.
4 Bats Roosting
Another Autumn spectacular that happens in the UK, is: bats roosting for winter.
A roost is where animals like bats will rest or sleep. Bats, like other British wild animals, begin to start hibernating during the Autumn and hibernate during the winter too. Bats will start to hibernate in the UK around this time of year (in November). The bats will nest in roosts.
Bat roosts are not only in caves in the wild, more often than not, but bat roots are also found within trees in the UK. The Woodland Trust estimates that three-quarters of bats in the UK will roost in trees during the Winter. So, you are perhaps more likely to find bats roosting in our woodlands and forests than you are in our caves.
But, bats are founding roosting in all sorts of places, including buildings.
Bats roost all year round, but their preparation for roosting in the Autumn is their biggest roosting event, where they will be entering hibernation for the winter.
3 Squirrels Nesting
Squirrels will prepare their nests for the Winter in Autumn.
Squirrels can also abandon their Summer nests and create new nests for the winter during Autumn. Seeing squirrels prepare for the winter during the Autumn is easy to see, in places like woodlands, or, anywhere where there are trees about.
Squirrels will gather leafs and take them up trees to make their nest, it is something which is cute to watch and is something that you can see during the Autumn
2 Hedgehogs Hibernating
Hedgehogs are perhaps Britain's favourite wild animals.
These cute animals are common throughout the British isles. They can be seen in places like woodlands, meadows and our own back gardens. Hedgehogs are found in a lot of different places, these adorable spiky animals are also found on farms.
But, you won't find them out and about in winter.
During Autumn, hedgehogs start preparing for hibernation. They will spend the full winter in hibernation and will start to come out of hibernation in March.
There are a few ways that hedgehogs will prepare for hibernation in Autumn. They will prepare for hibernation by finding and creating a space to hibernate in, and, they will prepare for hibernation in the Autumn by eating food. Hedgehogs will eat a lot during the Autumn, which builds up their fat reserves which helps them through winter.
