Lions are perhaps the most powerful animal in the animal kingdom.


They are a symbol of strength and courage.


Although there are several big cats in the animal kingdom; they are all unique. And, lions in particular are unique in both the cat kingdom and animal kingdom.


Let's look at 5 top interesting facts about these beautiful big cats. Let's start by looking at one of the things that make lions unique: living in groups.


5 The Pride Of Lions




One of the interesting facts about lions is that they live in groups.


These groups are known as a 'pride'.


This is very unusual in the cat kingdom, as both small and big cats are usually very solitary animals: they usually live alone, rather than live in groups. The only exceptions to this are when cats mate or a female cat is raising her young, then cats cat be seen together. But lions are different, as they live in groups.


A typical lion pride has about 15 lions living within it, although, lion prides can also be bigger than this. Lion prides also consist of the pride being made up of male lions and female lions. This makes these big cats quite sociable animals.


4 The Different Lion Species

Most lions today are found living in Africa, but, there are also Asian lions.


Asian lions are called Asiatic lions.


Asiatic lions are very similar to African lions, but look a bit different. One noticeable difference between the Asiatic lion and the African lion is the size of the mane on their heads - the Asiatic lion has a smaller mane than the African lion. Asiatic lions evolved from the African lion about 100,000 years ago.


African lions and Asiatic lions are the two species of lions today.


3 Extinct Lion Species

There have also sadly been species of lions that have gone extinct.


One of the species of lions that have gone extinct went extinct in recent history. The Barbary lion was a species of lion that went extinct in 1956.


The Cape lion is another species of lion that has went extinct in recent history. Sadly, Cape lions went extinct in the late 19th century.


Several other lion species have went extinct further back in time. These lions are - the Northern American cave lion, the Eurasian cave lion and the Marsupial lion.


2 Vulnerable To Extinction

Lions seem to be numerous, however, these beautiful cats are sadly becoming rare.


Today, lions are vulnerable to extinction.


The population of lions is much lower than we would think. The population of African lions is the most numerous of the two species of lions alive today. However, the population of African lions in the wild is estimated to be around 23,000 lions. The WWF estimates that the African lion population has dropped by a massive 40% in just three generations. Some of the major reasons for the decline in African lions includes habitat destruction and the illegal wildlife trade.


Asiatic lions fare much worse than their African cousins, as their population is much much lower today. Asiatic lions are only found in one place in the wild - they are only found in the wild in a forest in India called the Gir forest. The population of Asiatic lions are very low today, there are only 523 Asiatic lions today, this makes Asiatic lions sadly one of the most endangered animals in the world.


1 Sleepy Big Cats


Lions are adorable and cute animals.


In some ways, lions are animals that are different from other cat species, but, in most ways, lions share many of the same characteristics and personality traits that all other cats have. This includes sharing personality traits with our cute house cats.


Such as: sleeping habits. Our pet cats are known for their love of sleeping and their sleeping habits. Pet cats can sleep for an average of 16 hours a day. Lions on the other hand also sleep for very long periods of time. Lions are in fact one of the sleepiest animals in the animal kingdom, these beautiful big cats sleep for up to 20 hours per day, which means that they sleep for most of the day.


They may sleep a lot, but they look really cute when they do sleep! šŸ§”šŸ¦
