The World's Rarest Primate Species Has Tripled In Size

There is positive news for the world's most endangered primate species: the world's rarest primate species has more than tripped in size since the 1970's.

What Is The World's Most Endangered Primate Species?

The world's most endangered primate species is the critically endangered Hainan gibbon. The Hainan gibbon is also known as the Hainan black crested gibbon.

These animals have about doubled their population since the last time the IUCN assessed the species. The last time the IUCN assessed the Hainan gibbon there was between 15 to 20 of them.

What Is The Population Of Hainan Gibbons Today?

Today it has just been reported that there are now more than 30 of these rare animals.

The population has now more than tripled because of successful conservation work.

This is encouraging news - this rare primate has been brought back from the brink of extinction, there was once fewer than 10 of these animals remaining in 1970. Being pulled back from the brink of extinction is not just encouraging news for this species, it's also endangering for other wild animals who are in a similar position and are critically endangered.
