The Vaquita Porpoise Is Closer To Extinction Than Ever Before

The Vaquita porpoise is closer to extinction than ever before.

These animals are one of the rarest animals in the world today and are on the brink of extinction

Their population has almost halved since 2018. In two years, these animals have gone from having 19 individuals to their now only being 10 individuals.

Their population has also declined significantly since 1997. In 1997, there were thought to be 567 of them left in the world - it was still a small number, but a significantly larger one than we have today of the Vaquita porpoise. Their population then fell significantly over the course of just 10 years, as in 2007, it was reported that there were only 150 individuals left.

It shows how quickly a species can decline when they are endangered.

It's possible that there are as few as 6 Vaquita porpoises left today.

All hope isn't lost, as a plan was launched last year to help these animals. However, time is not on this species side - if no work is done to help save the species and they keep declining in the same way that they have been over the last few years, then it's likely we will see this extinction of them.
