The UK's Demand For Overseas Products Has Caused An Increase In Deforestation

A new report by both the RSPB and WWF called the 'Riskier Business Report' has found that deforestation has increased due to the UK's demand for overseas products.

These products are ones that we all buy and can found in any UK household, such as cocoa, palm oil, paper, beef, soy, leather and timber. All of these products and more, are causing deforestation all over the world, from the Indonesian rainforest, to the Amazon rainforest.

Deforestation threatens animals which are already endangered and at risk of extinction, such as Orangutans, Drill Monkeys and Amazon River Dolphins.

When we destroy rainforests, it is not just the beautiful ecosystems that we lose, but also the beautiful animals that we lose. When we save rainforests, we save all of the animal life that is within those rainforests and all of the beautiful flowers and plants within those rainforests.

It is just seven products that we consume or buy which is causing deforestation in other parts of the world. These seven products are timber, cocoa, palm oil, beef, soy, pulp/paper and leather.

Our demand for all of these products causes so much destruction that it is threatening many species with extinction. It's thought that the demand for just these seven products is resulting in 2,500 species being threatened with extinction.

The UK may be about to take this issue seriously, as the UK parliament is set to introduce a new Environment Bill aimed at reducing the UK's role in deforestation.
