The U.S. Has Declared That 23 Species Have Become Extinct, Including The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker 💔

The U.S has declared that 23 different species have sadly become extinct.


This includes the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.


Let's take a look at the 23 species that have been recently declared extinct by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, starting with the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.


Ivory-Billed Woodpecker



The last sighting of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker was in 1944. While the last subspecies of Ivory-Billed Woodpecker was last seen in 1986. Therefore, these cute birds haven't been seen in decades now. They sadly aren't the only animals to be declared extinct.


Bachman's Warbler


Bachman's Warbler is another bird that has just been declared extinct.


The Bachman's Warbler was already one of North America's rarest songbirds by the early 1950s. They were listed as an endangered species in 1967 and, the last confirmed sighting of these cute birds was in 1988.


Bridled White-Eye



It's a sad time for birds, as the Bridled White-Eye is another bird that has sadly been declared. The last sighting of them was in 1983.


Large Kauai thrush




The Large Kauai Thrush has also been declared extinct. The Large Kauai Thrush was last seen in 1987, therefore, they also haven't been seen in decades.


This is not the only Kauai bird that has been declared extinct - there are three other Kauai birds that have been declared extinct. The other three Kauai birds are - the Kauai Akialoa (last seen in 1969), the Kauai Nukupuu (last seen in 1899), and, the Kaua'i o o bird (which was last seen in 1987).



Sadly, out of the 23 species of birds that were declared extinct, 11 of them were bird species. The other bird species declared extinct were - the Maui akepa, the Maui nukupu'u, the Molokai creeper and the Po'ouli.


There have also been one bat species declared extinct.


The bat species declared extinct was called the Little Mariana Fruit Bat (also known as the Guam Flying Fox). The last time they were seen was in 1968.


Two fish species have also been declared extinct. These two fish species are the San Marcos Gambusia (last seen in 1983), and, the Scioto Madtom (last seen in 1957).


While one plant species has also been declared extinct. The plant species declared extinct is called the Phyllostegia glabra var. lanaiensis. It was last seen in 1914.


And finally, eight mussel species have also been declared extinct.


Most of the species of the 23 species declared extinct were bird species, followed by mussel species. There is a list below of how many species have been lost.
