Shetland is well-known and well-loved for its amazing and unique wildlife and stunning scenery.
Amongst the most popular of Shetland's wildlife includes cute animals like puffins, seals and otters.
Shetland is also home to other unique and cute animals, such as Shetland's unique species of bumblebee.
The Shetland bumblebee is a unique species of bumblebee which is mostly not found anywhere else in the UK. These bumblebees are mostly found in the very northern parts of the British Isles and are found nowhere else on the British Isles - making these cute insects unique to places like Shetland.
The Shetland bumblebee is distinct from the bumblebees throughout the mainland. Most types of bees seen throughout the UK are bees with yellow and black stripes. But in Shetland, it is different with the Shetland bumblebee. Shetland also has the yellow and black striped bumblebee (the Garden bumblebee) and, they are also lucky enough to have the Shetland bumblebee.
The Shetland bumblebee is yellow, orange and black.
Shetland bumblebees are very distinctive and stand out with their yellow, black and orange bodies. The top half of their bodies are orange, while underneath them these cute insects have a yellow abdomen. Their legs are black, with what seems like a hint of orange or yellow on them and, their beautiful wings are clear.
Shetland bumblebees are also more adaptable than garden bumblebees. Garden bumblebees are mostly just found in gardens in the UK, but Shetland bumblebees are very adaptable - Shetland bumblebees can be found in any habitat. But they nest in open landscapes.
The Shetland Biological Centre has done surveys to help understand the population of the Shetland bumblebee within Shetland. If you would like to see their bumblebee survey sheet, then you can find the Shetland bumblebee survey sheet - here!
