The UK government is looking at protecting endangered sharks from the fin trade.
The UK government wants to protect the world's sharks and is looking for more information about how the fin trade harms sharks. They want to introduce ''greater protections'' for sharks in the world from things like the fin trade.
What Is The Shark Fin Trade?
The shark fin trade does something that is known as 'shark finning'.
Shark finning is when sharks are captured in the wild and the fins on their body are removed. It is a cruel and barbaric trade, as those who take part in shark finning then throw back the sharks after they have taken the sharks fin off of them.
It is estimated by the Shark Research Institute that as many as 100 million sharks are killed every single year because of shark finning.
What Does The UK Government Plan To Do?
The UK government plans to crack down on the barbaric and cruel shark fin trade upon Brexit. The UK government wants to reduce shark fins being exported and imported into the UK. This is very important, as shark finning happens to sharks when they are still alive, so it is a really cruel and barbaric practice.
If the UK bans shark finning, then it would be the first European country ever to do so and would help create a safer and more compassionate world for sharks to live in.
Upon Brexit, the UK would be able to ban shark finning and put more protective measures into helping endangered species - including endangered sharks. A petition in the UK has been signed by over 100,000 people calling on the UK government to ban shark fin imports into the UK.
The UK government replied to the petition recently and said that they were opposed to shark finning and that they are working to end 'illegal' shark finning globally.
Now would be a great time to move towards a more compassionate world for sharks, where they are not killed for their fins. The government is looking for people to give them their views on the shark fin trade - you can help sharks by giving the UK government your views on the shark trade here! (Please give your views respectfully, so that we can work together to make a better world for sharks)!
