The Scottish government tonight has just voted to make Mountain Hares a protected species.
They have also voted to stop the mass killings of Mountain Hares within Scotland. It is estimated by the animal charity One Kind, that 26,000 Mountain Hares are killed each year.
It's good news that Mountain Hares are now going to be protected in law, as hopefully, it means that these mass killings of the animals don't happen anymore.
There is also another reason why this is good news for these animals, as they have declined significantly over the past few decades within Scotland. A new study published in 2018, found that that the Hare population had fallen by more than 99%, to less than 1% of their population total. In other words, the population of these animals has almost been entirely wiped out in just six decades. The good news, however, is that now the same animals will have legal protection.
With legal protection, the future seems brighter for Mountain Hares in Scotland.
