The Scottish government voted on and passed, the 'Animals and Wildlife (Penalties, Protections and Powers) (Scotland) Bill' last night. The legislation will help give animals and wildlife more protection in law, from persecution and harm.
Two of the main ways that it will help animals are:
. increased penalties for those who cause serious harm to animals
. increased penalties for committing wildlife crimes
This will be upheld with new fixed penalties being introduced for animal and wildlife crimes.
People who cause harm to wildlife and animals will also be held accountable for their actions, and 'inspectors and constables' will be given new powers that will allow them to act on animal welfare issues. These new powers will be things like being allowed to give sick or injured animals treatment and the powers to rehome animals that may be being mistreated.
The legislation is now passed, though yet to become law.
