The Scottish Government Is Being Taken To Court Over Its Support For Cruel Animal Exports

The Scottish government is being taken to court by the animal charity 'Compassion in World Farming' over the government's cruel policy of exporting baby calves to countries like Spain. These baby calves endure long journeys on the road while the animals are still alive.

Young calves can be on the road trapped in lorries for up to a week as they go from Scotland to other parts of Europe. In 2018, a BBC documentary called 'The Dark Side of Dairy' found that male calves were being transported from Scotland, then to Ireland, then other parts of Europe like Spain, where the animals were confined and cramped into lorries for days.

The Dark Side of Dairy also reported on how calves that came from Scotland also ended up beyond Europe and were transported as far as the middle east - these animals were transported all the way from Scotland to the middle east on long, cramped journeys.

When the calves got to the middle east, they were killed in a graphic way and without the regulations that are in place in Scottish abattoirs. Therefore, the calves faced an unnecessarily long journey and cruel death because of the Scottish government's support for animal exports.

There have been thousands of calves that have endured this cruelty.

At the same time that the Scottish government is keeping its cruel animal policy alive, the UK government is looking at banning live animal exports to stop this cruelty.

Compassion in World Farming is trying to stop live animal exports from happening from Scotland too. They are taking the Scottish government to court to stop Scotland's live animal exports.
