North Atlantic Whales are at risk of extinction, according to the IUCN.
North Atlantic Whales are one of the few Whale species that exist in the world. There are only 13 great Whale species in the world today and over half of them are either endangered or vulnerable to extinction. Before the IUCNs recent update, North Atlantic Whales were classified as endangered and there was estimated to be 400 North Atlantic Whales in the wild.
Or maybe fewer.
But, both the conservation status and the population of these animals have changed since they were last assessed. The IUCN has changed the conservation status from endangered to critically endangered, meaning that they are just one step away from becoming extinct.
The population of North Atlantic Whales has also changed. Today, there are now fewer than 250 North Atlantic Whales existing in the wild today. There have been a few reasons for their decline, such as entanglement and a lower reproduction rate.
