The Large Blue Butterfly Thriving In Britain Again, 40 Years After Being Declared Extinct

The Large Blue Butterfly

Some happy news, as it has been reported that the Large Blue Butterfly is thriving again in Britain!

This is great news, as a few decades ago, the Large Blue Butterfly was declared extinct. The Large Blue Butter was declared extinct in Britain in 1979. However, the species itself is found within a large number of countries within the Northern hemisphere.

The map below shows where the Large Blue Butterfly is found today.

The yellow areas of the map are where the Large Blue Butterfly is found.

The Large Blue Butterfly Distribuation: Yellow Is Where They Are Found

These beautiful Butterflies are found within Europe and Asia.

Although these animals went extinct in the UK in 1979, they are not generally an extinct species today. Neither are they an endangered species.

Instead, the Large Blue Butterfly today is classed as 'near threatened' by the IUCN. This means that these beautiful Butterflies are nearly threatened with extinction today.

Large Blue Butterfly

The Large Blue Butterfly is also simply known as the 'Large Blue'.

They are the biggest blue Butterfly in the UK.

After going extinct in Britain in 1979, efforts to restore the Large Blue Butterfly were quickly launched. They were reintroduced into the UK in the 1980s and now the beautiful animals can be found in Southern England. Now, they are flourishing in the country.

The reintroduction of these beautiful butterflies has been so successful that they have now been found within an area of the UK that the Butterflies haven't been present in for over 100 years now: the Large Blue Butterfly has been found living in Gloucestershire.

This is amazing, as it is the first time that Large Blue Butterflies have been present in Gloustershire for 150 years. This shows how much of a success the reintroduction of this species has been.

It also offers hope to other species.

A Protected Species

The Large Blue Butterfly has been protected in the UK since the 1980s.

The UK government introduced legislation to protect the Large Blue Butterfly in the 1980s, this piece of legislation is known as the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

The Large Blue Butterfly is now a fully protected species in the UK.

The Success Of These Butterflies

These Butterflies have been successfully breeding throughout the Summer.

There have been 750 Large Blue Butterflies that have emerged over the Summer.
