There is good news for European Bisons, as they are now recovering!
The IUCN has announced that European Bisons are recovering from being at the edge of extinction. European Bisons were gone from the wild by the early 20th century in Europe and they only existed in captivity by that point. However, during the mid 20th century European Bisons were released into the wild again.
It has taken decades, but now, we are starting to see the European Bison recover in the wild; these beautiful animals show that successful wildlife conservation can help a species who is on the brink of extinction bounce back again!
They were classed as 'vulnerable' to extinction. However, now their conservation status has changed due to the successful conservation that has been done on European Bisons, and now they are classed as 'near threatened'.
The European Bison population has increased quite significantly over the last 17 years. Their population is now 6,200 European Bisons.
This conservation success story shows that with dedication and care, we can bring back species that are on the brink of extinction; the European Bisons conservation success story gives us optimism for other species who are endangered.
