Shetland is showing a kinder way to treat farm animals.
The group of islands which are the most Northernly part of the UK are leading the way in showing that there is a kinder way to treat farm animals.
In this instance, Shetland is showing that there is a kinder and more compassionate way to treat cows and their baby calves.
Why Is This Important?
It's important because this isn't the standard way that cows and their young calves are treated.
Heartbreakingly, baby calves are often ripped away from their mothers while still babies - just weeks old. Many are forced on long, gruelling trips across Europe and sometimes as far as the middle east or Africa - this is known as animal live exports.
Baby calves just weeks old are taken away from their mothers and are forced into warm, cramped lorries, where they can spend 24 hours or several days trapped in these cruel conditions. The calves are shipped off to other countries to be slaughtered, which is unnecessarily cruel.
A New Way Forward
Shetland is showing that there is a new, kinder and compassionate way forward. Where baby calves are not ripped away from their mothers but are instead kept with their mothers which is beneficial to both the calf and the mother. This could and should be something which is implemented elsewhere, as it would create a kinder and gentler world for animals.
