Scotland has announced that it is to ban seals from being shot by salmon farmers within Scotland.
Seals being shot within Scotland has been a controversial issue. Seals have been shot regularly by salmon farmers. Between 2011 and 2019, it is estimated that a total of 950 seals have been killed within Scotland.
Whatsmore, female seals which have been pregnant, even heavily pregnant seals have been shot in Scotland, which has led mothers to abandon their young pups.
Save Our Seals Fund has said about this that:
''In reality what we have in Scotland is a Government sanctioned unmonitored, unregulated and unnecessary slaughter of seals.''
In other words, the shooting of these animals has been needlessly barbaric.
As far back as 2006, these animals were also sadly being killed too. It was reported in 2006 that four pregnant female seals were shot dead on Orkney. While in 2016, it was further reported that hundreds of these animals were killed inhumanely around Scotland's coasts - these seals were pregnant too and other baby seals died a slow death of hunger because their mother was shot dead. All of this was sanctioned and supported by the Scottish government through the seal licenses, but that might change through proposed legislation.
The Scottish government has already passed the legislation and it is therefore to become law. This law for animals means that salmon farmers are banned from shootings seals.
