Scotland has failed to join the new 'Beyond Oil & Gas Alliance' at COP26.
The news comes from Friends of the Earth, who have reported that Scotland has failed to join the new 'Beyond Oil & Gas Alliance' at the climate summit, COP26.
The failure to join the Beyond Oil & Gas Alliance has resulted in the Scottish Government and Nicola Sturgeon being criticized.
Greenpeace has released a statement that says:
''The Scottish Government has been criticised after failing to join a new alliance launched today at COP26 that aims to phase out the fossil fuels driving the climate crisis.
Nicola Sturgeon said two weeks ago that unlimited extraction of fossil fuels was not consistent with Scotland’s climate obligations and their focus would be on the ‘fastest possible just transition for the oil and gas sector’. Despite this shift in message around oil and gas, the Scottish Government snubbed the chance to join a new Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance unveiled this afternoon.
Scottish Ministers had previously discussed the alliance with the Danish Government, who along with Costa Rica are founder members of the group which aims to secure a transition away from oil and gas. Other members include France, Ireland, Wales, New Zealand Quebec and Sweden.''
The Scottish Government and Nicola Sturgeon have been vocal about taking climate change seriously, but, words mean little where action is absent.
Or, where little action takes place to tackle climate change.
If the Scottish Government fails to take action on climate change, then its words about taking this issue seriously seem hollow.
We need action today - not tomorrow. We need action which is taken now on climate change and the biodiversity crisis - not abstract dates decades in the future.
The UK Government has also failed to sign up. But, the Welsh Government has signed up. The good news is that 11 governments have signed up.
