A new report published in Science Advances from the Simon Fraser University has said that sawfish are now facing global extinction.
The reason they state that sawfish are now facing extinction is due to overfishing.
The report is called the 'Overfishing and habitat loss drive range contraction of iconic marine fishes to near extinction'.
The report talks about the decline of sawfishes and the challenges and dangers posed to them. The dangers posed to sawfishes are dangers which are now threatening to drive sawfishes towards extinction.
There are several reasons why sawfishes are now threatened with extinction and why their population is declining. Sawfishes are declining due to overfishing, being hunted, and habitat loss.
There are also other threats to sawfishes, which put them at risk of becoming extinct. These other threats include sawfishes being hunted and sawfishes also being caught in fishing nets which harm them and probably often sadly kill the fish. Therefore, there is a combination of reasons why sawfishes are at risk of extinction today.
The report highlights the alarming decline that has taken place in the sawfish population, it states that sawfish were once found in 90 countries in the world, however, sawfish have now become extinct in over half of the countries they were once found in. Sawfishes are now extinct in 55 of the 90 countries they were once found in.
This is a very alarming decline in sawfishes and shows how much they have rapidly declined. The report says things like habitat protections to protect the sawfish are important for protecting sawfish and other animals for the future.
Species Of Sawfish
How many species of sawfish are there?
There are only 5 species of sawfish. These unique and wonderful animals are found in tropical waters.
Sadly today, all 5 species of sawfish are endangered, and therefore, all 5 species of sawfish are not threatened with extinction.
The 5 species of incredible sawfish are:
🌊 Smalltooth sawfish
🌊Largetooth sawfish
🌊Green sawfish
🌊 Dwarf sawfish
🌊Narrow sawfish
Sawfish are so incredibly rare today and at risk of extinction that they make the EDGE of Existence most endangered animals in the world list.
The largetooth sawfish is at number one on the EDGE of the Existence species list, at number two on the list is the green sawfish, the Smalltooth sawfish is also at number 2, at number 4 on their list is the Narrow Sawfish, at number 7 on their list is the Dwarf sawfish. Therefore, all species of sawfish make the top ten of the EDGE of Existence list, while most of the fish make the top 5. This shows how incredibly rare sawfishes are and also how much they are at risk of extinction today.
Sawfishes are incredibly unique animals, there are no other animals which are quite like them in the natural world today. Saving them and saving their habitat will ensure that one of the world's most unique, endangered and beautiful animals are preserved for the future and future generations.
