New EU rules allow animals to be tested again within the EU.
The new rules were introduced by - the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), is an agency of the EU. The new rules introduced by the ECHA will effectively mean that the EU ban on animal testing for cosmetics is no more.
The reason for this is that the new rules brought in by the ECHA would result in allowing companies to test on animals within the EU. PETA estimates that thousands of animals will be harmed by the new rules; the new rules would result in 5,500 animals (including fish, rabbits and rats) to be tested on for cosmetics.
Cosmetic testing in the EU was banned in 2013. However, if the EU allows exemptions to the ban on cosmetic testing on animals - like it is with the new rule - then it would undermine the EU 2013 and mean that there isn't a full ban on cosmetic testing on animals within the EU.
Cosmetic testing on animals is cruel and unnecessary. The EU is taking a backwards approach to animal welfare and rights. This move by the EU won't result in a kinder world for animals within the EU. The EU should be looking at alternatives to cosmetic testing on animals and replace it with something which is neither harmful to animals nor humans.
