Near extinction: Only 7 or 8 Vaquita porpoises now exist in the world.
There is some heartbreaking news, as it has been announced that the Vaquita dolphin population is now fewer than 10 individuals: it is now estimated that there are now only between 7 or 8 vaquita dolphins left in the world.
This means that they are critically endangered and one of the rarest animals in the world today. The vaquita dolphin is on the edge of extinction today.
Action For Earth has been following the story of the Vaquita dolphin. These cute animals are on our 'World's Most Endangered Animals' page.
The last time that we followed the vaquita dolphins story, they only had 10 individuals remaining, which shows that there has been a further decline in their population. This decline in the vaquita dolphin is worrying for their future, as they are slowly and quietly moving towards extinction.
They are the most endangered marine mammal in the world today.
Vaquitas are the worlds smallest porpoise species, they were only discovered in 1958. But, over the last few years, their population has been declining. In 2017, it was estimated that there were as low as 30 individuals, now in 2022 it is estimated that their population is between 7 and 8 individuals, this shows how many vaquita porpoises that we have lost in just a few years, and, how quickly we have lost them.
If they keep declining in the same way they have over the last few years, then we could tragically see these cute animals becoming extinct soon.
It is up to us to save the vaquita dolphin.
Will, we see these beautiful animals saved, or, will they become extinct...?
