Mountain Hare Killing Begins In Scotland

Mountain Hare

Mountain Hare killings have begun in Scotland. This comes a few weeks after the Scottish government said that it was going to protect Mountain Hares.

A Threatened Species

Mountain Hares recently were name as one of the UK's mammals which are threatened with extinction. The Mammal Society published it's own Red List of endangered mammals in the UK. The Mammal Society has found that a quarter of all of the UK's native mammals now face extinction here in the UK - one of those species is the Mountain Hare. The Mountain Hare is now classed as a threatened species in the UK.

The Sharp Decline In Mountain Hares

There has been a very sharp decline in Mountain Hares throughout the last few decades.

A report by the RSPB published last year found that there had been a 90% decline in Mountain Hares in Scotland in recent times, in what has been described as a ''catastrophic decline'' in the species. Overall in Scotland, Mountain Hares have almost been wiped out.

In 2018, it was revealed that the decline in Mountain Hares in Scotland was so severe, that Mountain Hares have declined to less than 1% of their population, compared to the 1950's.

Mountain Hares in Scotland seem to have largely decline through persecuation.

The Mountain Hare Killings Of 2020

The Mountain Hare killins in Scotland started on the 1st of August.

The Mountain Hare killing season in Scotland seems to last for eight months; from the beginning of August to the end of Febuary. This shameful bloodbath of Scotland's Mountain Hares is directed at one of Scotland's most vulnerable mammals. Even this year again in Scotland, Mountain Hares are facining another bloodbath desptiea ban.

Thousands of Mountain Hares are been killed each year in Scotland. The killing of Mountain Hares is probably the biggest reason these animals are being pushed to extinction in Scotland. In 2018, it was found that in one year alone, 38,000 Mountain Hares were killed in Scotland.

The Scottish government is failing to protect one of Scotland's most threatened species.
