There is good news, as a big butterfly thought to be extinct in the UK, has been seen.

This big butterfly is called the large tortoiseshell butterfly.

The beautiful large tortoiseshell butterfly was once thought to be extinct in Britain. They sadly started to decline in the 1950s and then they were presumed to be extinct in Britain in the 1960s. Which resulted in these beautiful butterflies being thought of as extinct in the UK, that is - until now.

The large tortoiseshell butterfly has been seen in Dorset.

Hopefully, this is the beginning of a comeback for the large tortoiseshell butterfly in the UK and they can bounce back and be seen in more places in the UK in the future. Especially since our butterflies are sadly in decline.

This news offers some hope, at least for this butterfly species.
