Japan's First Butterfly Species May Just Have Went Extinct

Celastrina ogasawaraensis

Japan's first butterfly species may have went extinct.

The species is a blue Butterfly known as Celastrina ogasawaraensis.

The blue butterfly is native to the Japanese Ogasawara Islands. The Ogasawara Islands are a group of more than 30 different islands that are south of Tokyo.

This blue butterfly species has been declining rapidly since the 1970s. There has been an effort to save this butterfly species for the past 15 years, as they have been in decline.

So, they have been declining for some time now.

The Japanese Environment Ministry has said they believe the Celastrina ogasawaraensis could now be extinct. The butterfly is already endangered. If the Celastrina ogasawaraensis goes extinct, then they will be the first butterfly species native to Japan to go extinct.
