Today is World Water Day; Happy World Water Day!
World Water Day is celebrated on the 22nd of March every year. The first World Water Day was held on the 22nd of March 1993.
The world has been celebrating World Water Day for nearly three decades now. Every World Water Day has a theme. The theme of last years World Water Day was 'Water and Climate Change'. We have a different theme this year.
The theme of this years World Water Day is 'Valuing Water'.
What Does Valuing Water Mean?
Valuing water can have many different meanings: we can all value water in different types of ways. For example, some people might value water because it's part of their livelihood and they wouldn't be able to have a livelihood without healthy water ecosystems. Coastal communities often rely on marine jobs.
There are other ways that we can value water too. We can value water because of what it gives us - such as our drinking water and rain. We can also value water for the things that it helps us do daily, such as brushing our teeth.
By valuing water, we appreciate it.
Water And The World's Ecosystems
Water is also a vital part of many ecosystems around the world.
There are many different types of ecosystems where water is an important part of the ecosystem, these include forests, marshlands and wetlands.
The world's largest wetlands is the Pantanal Wetlands. The Pantanal Wetlands is in South America, it is home to beautiful animals like the Jaguar.
In the UK, 10% of all of our species are found in our wetlands. This is a large percentage of our species, as, only 3% of the UK is wetlands.
Wetlands and other water ecosystems are important for the environment, animals and people. Water is important for all life on earth.
Happy World Water Day!
