Happy Serpent Day! 🐍

Snake

Today is Serpent Day; Happy Serpent Day!

Serpents are snakes, and snakes are reptiles. Serpents are one of the most successful animals on the planet. These mysterious animals can be found almost everywhere on the planet - serpents are found in every continent of the planet, except Antarctica.

It's estimated that there are over 3,000 species of snakes in the world today.

Adder Snake

Even in the UK, we have several different beautiful snake species!

Up until very recently, it was thought that the UK only had two different species of snakes. Those two different species of snakes are the adder snake and the grass snake. However, it was also discovered recently that the smooth snake also exists in the UK. Today, there are three different species of snakes that are found in the wild in the UK. Those three species of snake are - the adder snake, the grass snake and the smooth snake. It's cool that the UK has these three species of snake in the wild!

Sadly though, the adder snake has made headlines in recent years, as it is estimated that adder snakes could become extinct in the UK by 2032.

The good news is, is that we still have time to save adder snakes in the UK, and we can save them by doing things like protecting their natural habitat.

Snake

There are many different species of snakes all across the world.

The smallest snake species in the world is the Barbados threadsnake. The Barbados threadsnake is so small that they could fit onto one hand. Sadly, the Barbados threadsnake is also critically endangered today.

The biggest snake species in the world is the green anaconda (also known as the giant anaconda). Green anacondas are found in the Amazon rainforest. Green anacondas are so massive that they can grow to an impressive 29ft!

Snakes are not only found in forests, or on-land, they are also found in other habitats. This includes being found in seas. Sea snakes are found in tropical waters - like in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Although sea snakes live in a very different environment to on-land snakes, they look very similar to other species of snakes.

Snakes are one of the most unique animals in the animal kingdom, and, they are also really fascinating (and sometimes mysterious), animals.

Snakes are sadly one of the most misunderstood animals in the animal kingdom: snakes are shy animals and will avoid humans if they can.

Serpent day is a great day to celebrate these wonderful animals, and raise awareness about them. Snakes deserve compassion and love like all other animals, and, they play a really important part in many ecosystems across the world. Snakes are important in helping many ecosystems staying healthy across the world.

Serpent Day happens every year on the 1st of February. It is a way to celebrate snakes and raise awareness about them.

Happy Seperpent Day! 🐍
