Today is Reptile Awareness Day.
Happy Reptile Awareness Day!
Reptile Awareness Day is a day to celebrate and raise awareness about the world's reptiles. Reptiles are a group of animals, they include animals like turtles, lizards, snakes, crocodiles, amphisbaena and tuatara.
How Many Reptile Species Are There?
Reptiles are a numerous species: there are many of them.
It is estimated that there are 9475 reptile species on the earth today.
We are also still discovering new reptile species. For example, last year (in 2019), a new species of lizard was discovered. This new species of lizard is known as the girdled lizard. The girdled lizard was found in Angola.
There are probably other species of reptiles that we haven't found, which is exciting to think about what other species of reptiles exist out there!
How Many Species Of Reptile Are Endangered?
Reptile Awareness Day is a great day to raise awareness about how many of these beautiful and unique animals are endangered.
If we can raise awareness about endangered reptiles, then we can all help save the world's most endangered reptiles for future generations.
Today, 12% of all reptile species are critically endangered.
More worryingly, there is a staggering about of reptile species which are endangered today. Almost half of all reptile species are endangered today (41%).
Also, 47% of reptile species are vulnerable to extinction.
It is also said that 1 in 5 reptile species are struggling to survive, according to an ICUN report, which was released in 2013.
The Future For The World's Reptiles
The future can be a much better one for reptiles, than the past.
We have it in our power to create a world which is better for reptiles.
Reptiles deserve a place on this planet, alongside us, because it is their world too. And not only that, their longevity in the world is inspiring, and enough to help these animals and save them for the future - reptiles are estimated to have lived on earth for around 300 million years (how cool is that?!).
We think these cool and unique animals deserve this special day.
Happy Reptile Awareness Day! đđ˘
