Today is Pygmy Hippo Day; Happy Pygmy Hippo Day!


There are only two species of hippopotamuses in the world today. One of those species is the common hippo. While the other species is the pygmy hippo.


The common hippo also has other names. These other names are the hippopotamus and the river hippopotamus. This hippo species was once found throughout most of Africa. However, today, the common hippos range is now much smaller.


Today, common hippos are vulnerable to extinction.


The pygmy hippo is also known as the pygmy hippopotamus. Today, pygmy hippos are endangered. Their population is very low today, as it is estimated that there are only around 3,000 pygmy hippos left in the world. Other estimates say that the pygmy hippo population is between 2,000 and 2,499. This makes pygmy hippos one of the most endangered animals in the world today.


It also makes these beautiful and unique animals very vulnerable to extinction.

Pygmy hippos are considered to be of 'high conservation concern' because of their very low population and their endangered species status.


Sadly, their population is also decreasing, which also makes them a concern.


The pygmy hippo is only found in four different countries in Africa. These different countries are - Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Cote d'Ivorie. Within these countries, pygmy hippos are found in ecosystems like wetlands and forests.


Pygmy Hippo Day is celebrated on the 8th of April every year, it is a great day to celebrate these wonderful animals and raise awareness about them.


Due to their very low population, pygmy hippos are threatened with extinction today. There are several threats to their existence. These threats include things like mining, logging, hunting and things like civil unrest.


Hippos are one of the world's most unique animals. The only place in the world they are found in the wild is Africa. There aren't many pygmy hippos left today in the wild, preserving their habitat and protecting them is essential for their survival.
