Happy National Serpent Day!

Beautiful Snake

Today is National Serpent Day: Happy National Serpent Day!

National Serpent Day happens on the 1st of February every year.

Serpent Day is a great day to celebrate the world's fascinating snake species.

Snake

It is estimated that there are over 3,000 species of snakes existing in the world today. But, there could be more snake species that we have not found yet.

Just last week, the WWF had announced that they had discovered 224 new species: this included the WWF finding several new species of snakes.

One of the newly discovered snakes is called the 'slug snake'.

Adder Snake

Snakes are found all over the world; including in the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom is home to three different snake species. These snake species are - 1) the adder snake, 2) the grass snake and, 3) the smooth snake.

The smooth snake seems to be the UK's rarest snake species.

While adders are the only snake in the UK which is found all over Britain. However, the adder snake is also sadly in decline, due to their habitat being destroyed.

Protecting snakes for the future partly comes down to protecting their habitats, these habitats include woodlands, grasslands and forests.

Happy National Serpent Day!
