Today is International Zebra Day. 🖤🦓
Happy International Zebra Day! 🖤🦓
International Zebra Day happens on the 31st of January every year, it is a great day to celebrate these wonderful and unique animals.
It's also a great day to help raise awareness about zebras.
Let's start with species of zebra: there are three different species of zebra living in the world today. Those three different species of zebra are - the mountain zebra, the plains zebra and the Grevy's zebra.
The mountain zebra is sadly vulnerable to extinction today. There are two subspecies of mountain zebras, those two subspecies are - the cape mountain zebra and the Hartman 's mountain zebra, both subspecies are vulnerable to extinction.
The plains zebra is near threatened.
And finally, the Grevy's zebra is sadly an endangered animal today. The last time the Grevy's zebra was assessed by the IUCN Red List was in 2016, where their population was assessed, the IUCN found that there were only 1,956 Grevy's zebras left in the world.
This means, that Grevy's zebras are sadly very close to extinction and one of the most endangered animals in the world today.
To save zebras, we need to protect them and their habitats, so that they can be safe and survive in the future.
These beautiful animals deserve to be in this world, it is their home too, we are lucky to share our world with such a cute and unique animal.
Happy International Zebra Day! 🖤🦓
