Today is International Sloth Day: Happy International Sloth Day!!
International Sloth Day is a day to celebrate one of the world's cutest animals. It is a day that is celebrated on the 20th of October every year.
Sloths are adorable animals.
Sloths are well-known for two cute behaviours - 1) that they are known for their sleepy nature, and, 2) that they move very slowly.
Sloths move so slowly that they are the world's slowest-moving mammal.
Sloths are also thought to be the world's sleepiest animals, but, they might not be as sleepy as you think, as it is estimated that sloths sleep between 8-10 hours per day.
International Sloth Day is a great day to celebrate sloths and raise awareness about them. In the wild, sloths are found in South America and Central America.
There are two different types of sloths: the three-toed sloth and the two-toed sloth. There are six different species of sloths.
The six species of sloths are:
. Pygmy three-toed sloth (Critically Endangered)
. Pale-throated sloth (Least Concern)
. Brown-throated sloth (Least Concern)
. Maned sloth (Vulnerable to Extinction)
. Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Least Concern)
. Hoffman's two-toed sloth (Least Concern)
Sadly, one sloth species is critically endangered today: the Pygmy three-toed sloth is a critically endangered species today.
Pygmy three-toed sloths are one of the world's most endangered animals. They are included on the 'Edge of Existence' list of one of the world's most unique and endangered animals - they are at number 23 on the list because they are very close to extinction. Today, there are sadly no more than 100 of these cute animals left in the wild; it is estimated that there are as few as 79 individual Pygmy three-toed sloths left in the wild today. This makes these cute animals incredibly close to extinction.
Hopefully, we can save these cute animals from extinction. The destruction of their habitat is one of the main reasons that these cute animals are threatened with extinction. By protecting their habitat, we can hopefully protect them.
