Happy International Polar Bear Day!

Polar Bears

Today is International Polar Bear Day; Happy International Day!

International Polar Bear Day is celebrated on the 27th of February every year. The day was founded by Polar Bears International as a way to both celebrate Polar Bears and raise awareness about the cute animals.

One of the ways that International Polar Bear Day aims to raise awareness about Polar Bears is through raising awareness about the environment that Polar Bears live in. Polar Bears live in cold climates. They are found in the Arctic circle, in countries such as Canada, Russia, and more. The Polar bear environment - the Arctic - is at risk due to climate change.

A warm climate caused by climate change means less sea ice for Polar Bears, this is devastating for Polar Bears as they rely on sea ice for hunting for meals. If there is no sea ice, then Polar Bears will sadly and tragically starve to death. This is something that we have already been seeing, as a video was released in 2017 of a Starving Polar Bear on iceless land.

Climate change sadly risks this happening more in the future if we don't resolve the situation.

Today, the Polar Bear conservation status is 'vulnerable', which means that Polar Bears are vulnerable to extinction today. The Polar Bear population today is estimated to be between 22,000 and 31,000 Polar Bears left in the wild today.

Polar Bears are big animals, it is estimated that they can grow up to 9ft in length!

Female Polar Bears will have adorable baby cubs during December and January. A female Polar Bear will usually have between 1 and 2 Polar Bear cubs when she gives birth. The mum will look after her cute cubs for two months while they remain in the den, and then the cubs will start to leave the den in March or April.

International Polar Bear Day coincides with the time that the cubs will be leaving the dens with their mums.

In the next two months, during March and April, new Polar Bear cubs will be leaving the dens with their mums for the first time, which is adorable to think about!

Polar Bear cubs are adorable and they are adorable to watch in wildlife documentaries. Here is a clip from an adorable Polar Bear cub being surprised at a seal...
