Great Giant-Fox Spider Rediscovered In The UK After They Were Thought To Be Extinct For 21 Years! 🕷

Picture From Wildlife Trusts: Great Giant-Fox Spider

A species of spider known as the 'Great Giant-Fox Spider', has been rediscovered again in the UK, 21 years after they were thought to be extinct.

The Great Giant-Fox Spider is a beautiful grey colour.

The Great Giant-Fox Spider was thought to be extinct in the UK because they had not been seen during the last 21 years in the UK (until now).

The last time that the Great Giant-Fox Spider was seen in the UK, was in 1999. The last place that the Great Giant-Fox Spider was seen in the UK, was in Hankley Common, in Surrey England.

These spiders have only ever been spotted in the South of England in the UK. It is thought that this spider has been found in the South of England, due to the South of England's warmer climate, compared with the rest of the UK.

Where Was This Spider Found?

The Great Giant-Fox Spider that they have found, was found in an army training facility in Surrey.

What Is Their Conservation Status?

These spiders are critically endangered in the UK.

When a species is critically endangered, it means that they are very near becoming extinct. Some animals that become extinct in the wild, are found in zoos. But often when a species becomes extinct in the wild, it means that they become extinct entirely. Therefore, saving species in the wild is important for their survival.

With some species though, they make a comeback. There have been many instances where species have been declared extinct, or, they are thought to be extinct, then years, or even decades later, they are found again in the wild - much like the Giant-Fox Spider being rediscovered today.
