A new study has found that 1 in 5 reptiles face extinction.
The study has been published in 'Nature'
This study has been a global study about the world's reptiles. Researchers have found that 21.1% of reptile species are threatened with extinction today.
This means that 1,829 out of 10,196 reptile species in the world are sadly threatened with extinction today.
There are several reasons why reptiles are threatened with extinction.
The main reasons why reptiles are threatened with extinction are:
. logging
. agriculture
. urban development
Reptiles which are found in the world's forests are most at risk of extinction. It's unclear how much of a threat climate change poses to reptiles.
The study into reptiles found that crocodiles are the most threatened species of all the reptile species, with a massive 59% of crocodiles at risk of extinction.
Turtles were also found to be at high risk of extinction.
Crocodiles and turtles face similar threats that other species of reptiles do, however, crocodiles and turtles are also at risk from humans hunting them.
