Endangered Species Day 2022

Endangered Red Squirrel

Today is endangered species day 2022.

Endangered Species Day happens every year on the third Friday of each May. This year is the 17th Endangered Species Day.

Each Endangered Species Day has its own theme!

Tiger

The theme for last year's Endangered Species Day was -

'Wildlife Without Borders'.

This year's theme is different; the theme for Endangered Species Day 2022 is focused on recovering species and ecosystem restoration.

This year's theme is called -

'Recovering Key Species for Ecosystem Restoration.'

Adder

Restoring the world's ecosystems is important for wildlife.

The world has lost much (if not most) of its ecosystems. For example, it is estimated that 80% of the world's forests have been destroyed. This is a tragedy, as it's not just the plant life of those forests that have been destroyed, but also the animal life.

There is even worse, as meadows in the UK have sadly faired worse. There has been an alarming and dramatic decline in meadows in the UK: The United Kingdom has lost/destroyed a MASSIVE 97% of its meadows.

The decline and destruction of meadows in the UK are why we need to create new meadows. We can also help by creating mini-meadows in our own gardens.

Flowers

By rewilding and restoring ecosystems we can help to reverse the decline in nature.

Meanwhile, keystone species are important for ecosystems. Keystone species are important for ecosystems as these are the species which hold ecosystems together.

There are many examples of keystone species, these are:

. Elephants

. Sharks

. Deers

. Bears

These are just some of the examples of keystone species, however, there are many more. Keystone species are the species that basically hold ecosystems together.

Endangered Species Day is also a good day to raise awareness about endangered species and appreciate them. It is also a good day to think about the way that we are treating the planet, in the hope of treating it better so that other species do not become endangered or critically endangered.
