Sadly, deforestation is still happening in the critically endangered Scottish Wildcats forest home.
The deforestation of the Scottish Wildcats home has been happening now for a few years. Since at least 2018, logging has been threatening the existence of the Scottish Wildcat.
The reason that deforestation is threatening the existence of Scottish Wildcats is that their population is already extremely low. In 2018, there were only 35 of these animals left in the wild in Scotland. However, likely due to logging, this vulnerable species has declined since then - now there are only 30 individual Scottish Wildcats remaining in the wild today.
Two years ago a petition was created were almost 1 million people signed it, asking the Scottish government to protect the Scottish Wildcats habitat from being destroyed. However, the Scottish government has ignored the petition so far and has refused to protect their forest home.
Now, a group called Scottish Wildcat Haven is taking legal action over the Scottish government destroying the Scottish Wildcats forest home. The Scottish Wildcat Haven group is now legally challenging for the government's deforestation which is causing wildlife crime.
The Scottish Wildcat is Scotland's most endangered animal and one of the world's most endangered wild animals. Continued deforestation of their habitat is criminal, destroying the habitat of a critically endangered species and pushing them towards extinction.
The Scottish Wildcat is supposed to be protected in law, but, the Scottish government is failing to protect these beautiful animals, and they may end up causing their extinction in the future if the Scottish government keeps on giving the go-ahead to deforestation.
Time is running out to save these beautiful animals.
But, you can help.
Please help the Scottish Wildcat by protecting their forest home - petition is here.
