Deforestation Has Declined By 18% In Africa!

A new report has revealed that deforestation in Africa has decline recently.

The report into deforestation in Africa is published in nature and is called 'The impact of near-real-time deforestation alerts across the tropics'.

The report into deforestation has revealed that deforestation in Africa has declined by 18% recently. The decline in deforestation was compared to the deforestation that happened between 2011 and 2016 in Africa.

The researchers monitored deforestation in 22 'subtropical countries'.

The researchers found that deforestation had only declined in Africa, and hadn't decline in any of the other continents in the world.

Why Has Deforestation Declined In Africa?

Deforestation has declined in Africa thanks to something called GLAD alerts.

GLAD alerts are alerts from satellites. The satellites monitor forests to look out for signs of deforestation in the forests. If signs of deforestation are picked up by the satellites, then an alert is given - these alerts are called GLAD alerts.

The GLAD alerts are updated frequently: GLAD alerts are updated weekly. This is good news, as it means that scientists and wildlife conservationists can pick up on deforestation quickly when and if it happens.

Why Is This Important?

Tracking deforestation is important to save rainforests and the animals that live within rainforests. Tracking rainforests is important to stopping deforestation.

Preventing deforestation is particularly helpful to endangered species who rely on rainforests for their survival. Animals like lemurs depend upon the rainforests of Madagascar to survive, as the Madagascan rainforest provides lemurs with food and shelter. Stopping deforestation in places like Madagascar is particularly important, as most of the animals and plant species that are found living within the Madagascan rainforest are found nowhere else in the world. Therefore, by saving ecosystems like the Madagascan rainforest, we will be saving species which are unique to the world.
