Critically Endangered Bornean Orangutans

Borneo Orangutan

Bornean orangutans are one of the most unique animals in the natural world.

Sadly, these beautiful animals are also one of the most threatened animals in the world today, as Bornean orangutans are critically endangered today.

Borneo Orangutans

Sadly, the Bornean orangutan population has been declining.

Their population has been declining for the last few decades. The WWF estimates that the Bornean orangutan population has declined by more than 50% in just the last 60 years. This is a very dramatic and severe decline in these cute animals.

In 2018, it was reported that more than 150,000 Bornean orangutans had been killed due to humans clearing their forests and hunting them.

This is a very alarming decline in Bornean orangutans, as today, it is estimated that there are only 104,700 Bornean orangutans left in the world.

The main threats to these beautiful animals are - the destruction of their forest home, the illegal wildlife trade and being hunted by humans.

There is also a new threat to Bornean orangutans that could see their forest home destroyed to make way for a new city, as Indonesia is set to create a new capital near to where the Borneo rainforest is. Relocating the capital near to the Borneo rainforest could result in more of the forest being cleared for land.

To protect the Bornean orangutan we need to protect their forest home. Without the forests, Bornean orangutans and all of the other animals that live within the rainforest will no longer have a home and cannot survive.

The future of these beautiful animals is in preserving the rainforests.
