It has been announced at the COP26 climate change that world leaders have pledged to stop deforestation.
114 world leaders have pledged to stop deforestation by 2030.
It has been announced that:
'114 world leaders took a landmark step forward at a convening of world leaders on forests by committing to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030. The pledge is backed by $12 billion in public and $7.2 billion in private funding.'
This is welcoming, encouraging and good news.
But, it also seems to be lacking in dealing with deforestation and the biodiversity crisis in the here and now. Instead, like many climate change goals, it seems that this goal to stop deforestation is moved to a date in the future.
While everything cannot change overnight, we need action in the here and now to stop deforestation and other habitat destruction. We are currently in a biodiversity crisis - where we are losing species, forests and other habitats right now. Many critically endangered and endangered species don't have a decade to wait until we stop habitat destruction: we need to stop habitat destruction now if these species are going to survive in the future.
Setting an arbitrary date in the future to stop deforestation doesn't deal with deforestation in the present time.
What are world leaders doing right now to stop deforestation?
