What Is A Murmuration?
A murmuration is a group of Starlings that flock together. The group consists of thousands of Starlings putting on an aerial display for everyone to see.
Starling murmurations happen when the birds are roosting.
It is believed that one of the reasons that Starlings may create murmurations and stay in these massive groups of Starlings, is to keep themselves safe from other birds who would eat the Starlings. Thousands of eyes looking out for danger, are better than two eyes from a single Starling looking out for danger. Even when Starlings are not creating murmurations, they can almost always been seen with a group of Starlings.
By staying in groups, Starlings help themselves by being safer, and, they also give us one of nature's most incredible display's with these murmurations.
Murmurations can be seen in the UK and other parts of Europe.
You can see Starling murmurations at their peak between December and January every year. The great news is that you don't need any binoculars to see them.
