We are now less than two weeks away from Christmas, and today, we are celebrating an animal that is the central part of millions of families across the world: cats. Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world. It is estimated that there could be as many as 600 million pet cats in the world today!
Cats have been pets of humans for such a long time. Initially, it was thought that the Ancient Egyptians were the ones to domesticate cats. However, there is evidence that pet cats date back further in time than Ancient Egypt. There is evidence that people kept cats as pets as far back as the Neolithic period; the oldest known pet cat found is from 9,500 BC from Cyprus.
Cats have also been on every continent in the world. Our fave felines have also reached Antarctica; the first cats to visit Antarctica are known as the Antarctica cats and they reached the South Shetland Islands in 1820!
