Cheetahs To Be Reintroduced In India, Decades After Being Extinct There

Asiatic Cheetah

There is good news, as cheetahs are set to be reintroduced in India.

This is good news as cheetahs have been extinct in India for decades now: cheetahs became extinct in India in 1952. This means that these beautiful big cats have almost been extinct in India for 70 years.

The good news is, is that with plans to reintroduce these beautiful big cats in India, they are set to make a comeback and will no longer be extinct in India.

India is set to get 10 cheetahs from Africa so that they can reintroduce the big cat species back into India for the first time in decades.

Did You Know

Cheetah

Africa is famous for its big cat species - such as lions and cheetahs. But, did you know that cheetahs have not only roamed the wild throughout the African continent, they have also historically roamed throughout Asia.

Today though, Asia's cheetahs are near extinction.

The Asian cheetah is called the Asiatic cheetah, they are critically endangered today and are only found in the wild within Iran.

As a critically endangered species, the Asiatic cheetah population is very small. The Asiatic cheetah population today is only around 50 cats. This shows how rare Asiatic cheetahs are, and, how vulnerable to extinction they are.

Hope For The Future

With cheetahs set to be reintroduced into India, it offers hope for the future for these beautiful big cats in Asia. Perhaps this is the beginning of seeing cheetahs making a comeback in Asia, where they can once again roam the lands. Hopefully, this is the start of their recovery.
