The UK budget was revealed yesterday by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak. The budget of 2020 focused on many things, including the environment.
There are a few things relating to the environment and nature that the UK government has planned in its 2020 budget. One of the main things that the UK government plans to do in relation to nature is introducing a new cash boost for nature which is aimed to help nature's recovery in the UK. This recovery plan will be to focus on restoring the UK's peatlands and planting 40 million trees.
Restoring nature isn't the only plan that the UK government has to help protect our environment, they also plan to tackle plastic pollution. The government will help to tackle plastic pollution and encourage people to recycle by introducing a Plastic Packaging Tax.
The new Plastic Packaging Tax will be introduced by April 2022. The government hopes to reduce plastic pollution by introducing this new tax. They will also be encouraging more recycling and dealing with fly-tipping to help prevent plastic pollution in the future.
Plans To Help Preserve Nature
The UK government also has plans to help preserve nature. The government has set out a 25 Year Environment Plan which aims to help preserve nature, wildlife, plants, and water. The 25 Year Environment Plan will also focus on tackling climate change.
The government set out its 25 Year Environment Plan in 2018. Their 2020 budget sets to build on that 25 Year Environment Plan to help preserve the environment and nature.
In addition to that, there will be a Nature for Climate Fund introduced. The Nature for Climate Fund will see £640 million invested into restoring the natural world. The Nature for Climate Fund will primarily focus on restoring peatlands and planting trees. There will also be a fund to help wildlife, called the Nature Recovery Network Fund, which will help protect wildlife and their habitats. While finally, the government has also introduced a Natural Environment Impact Fund.
