Beavers became extinct in Britain during the 16th century. They became extinct in Britain due to people hunting beavers for the beaver's fur, their meat and their scent glands. It's just in recent times that beavers have started to make a comeback in the UK, as the first two beavers were reintroduced into the UK 20 years ago when in 2001, the Wildlife Trusts reintroduced the pair into Kent. Then, more beavers were reintroduced in 2009 in Scotland.
There are places in Britain where beavers have been absent for hundreds of years now. It is a historical moment that we are seeing beavers reintroduced into places that they have been absent from for hundreds of years.
The Dorset Wildlife Trusts has recently just released a pair of beavers into Dorset, 400 years after beavers have been gone from Dorset.
More of these reintroductions are set to occur by the Wildlife Trusts in the UK during this year, which is exciting and optimistic news for these adorable animals!
