Animal Profiles: The Visayan Warty Pig



Many animals that are on the brink of extinction do not get the attention or publicity that they need or deserve. But, here is a place to raise awareness about the animals that are sadly on the brink of extinction and draw attention to them.


By drawing attention to them, we can help raise awareness about them and help prevent their extinction. In this post, we are going to be focusing on an animal on the brink of extinction, that is one of the rarest animals in the world today.


That animal is called the Visayan Warty Pig.


What Is Their Conservation Status?


The Visayan Warty Pig is sadly critically endangered today.


Through being critically endangered today, these cute and interesting animals are on the brink of extinction - especially with their population being so low.


What Is Their Population?


The population of the Visayan Warty Pig is very low today. Their population is so low, that it is estimated that there are only 200 Visayan Warty Pigs remaining.


This makes these beautiful pigs extremely close to extinction.


What Is Their Population Trend?

Their population trend is 'decreasing,' which sadly means that the population of the Visayan Warty Pig has been declining.


Some Good News


There is some good news for these beautiful animals though, as a few weeks ago, a new Visayan Warty Pig was born in Chester Zoo in England.


What Threats Do They Face?


Sadly, however, these pigs still face numerous threats in the wild. These threats include - the destruction of their habitat, being hunted, logging and the development of housing and other urban development.


The threats to their existence have already resulted in the Visayan Warty Pig being driven to extinction in 3 out of the 6 islands they once inhabited. Conservations also believe that these pigs also may be extinct from one of the fourth islands.


Where Are They Found?


This means that conservations are only sure that they exist living on two islands today. These two islands are found in the Philippines, in Asia.


What Is Their Habitat?


They are found living within forests and grasslands.


What Is Their Diet?


These cute pigs are herbivores.


They eat various foods, such as vegetables, cereal and forest fruits.
