Animal Profiles: The Sunda Pangolin

Cute Pangolin

The Sunda pangolin is one of the species of pangolins found living in the wild.

There are a total of eight pangolin species. All eight of these pangolin species are either found in Asia or Africa in the wild.

The eight different pangolin species are:

. Ground Pangolin

. White-bellied Pangolin

. Black-bellied Pangolin

. Temminck's Pangolin

. Chinese Pangolin

. Indian Pangolin

. Indonesian Pangolin

. Sunda Pangolin

Sadly, pangolins are the most trafficked animal in the world. This has resulted in all pangolin species either being vulnerable to extinction to critically endangered.

The WWF estimates that 1 million pangolins have been trafficked in the last ten years; this shows the threat that pangolins face in the modern world.

In this post, we are going to take a look at the Sunda pangolin!

What Is Their Conservation Status?

Sadly, Sunda pangolins are critically endangered today.

Being critically endangered is one step away from becoming extinct, therefore, Sunda pangolins are sadly at risk of extinction.

What Is Their Population Trend?

The population trend of these cute animals is also not good, as their population is declining. The last time the population of the Sunda pangolin was assessed by the IUCN was in 2019, therefore, they were studied fairly recently.

What Is Their Population?

The exact population of the Sunda pangolin is unclear, this is due to the Sunda pangolin being nocturnal and elusive, making it hard for wildlife conservationists to understand fully what the Sunda pangolin population is.

Where Are They Found?

The map above shows the area where Sunda pangolins are found.

Sunda pangolins are found in Asia. These animals are found in many different countries in Asia, including - Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar.

What Is Their Habitat?

Sunda pangolins are found in forests and shrublands.

What Threats Do They Face?

Pangolin

The biggest threat to pangolins is poaching caused by the illegal wildlife trade.

Pangolins are trafficked after being stolen from the wild.

This is heartbreaking and also threatens pangolins like the Sunda pangolin with extinction. Tackling the threat that they face from the illegal wildlife trade is important if these animals are going to survive and thrive in the future.

Sunda pangolins also have a few other threats in the wild, two of the other main threats to their existence are - the destruction of their forest home and, housing developments and urban areas.

Protecting the forests that pangolins live in and stopping the illegal wildlife trade is important if the Sunda pangolin is going to survive in the future.
