Animal Profiles: The Grand Cayman Blue Iguana 💙



The Grand Cayman Blue Iguana is a beautiful species of iguana.


Sadly, even though these iguanas are beautiful, they are also very rare, as they are one of the most endangered animals in the world today. These iguanas are so rare, that they are rarer than endangered species such as pandas and tigers.


Where Are They Found?


These beautiful animals are so rare that they are only found in one place on earth: they only exist on the Cayman Islands, which is in the Caribbean Sea.


The population of the Cayman Islands is just over 71,000 people.


Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas are only found in the Cayman Islands in the wild and nowhere else in the world. This makes conserving them even more important, as, if these beautiful iguanas were to go extinct in the Cayman Islands, then, they would be extinct for good.


What Is Their Conservation Status?


The conservation status of the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana today is 'endangered': this means that these blue iguanas are an endangered species today.


But was also a critically endangered species.


What Is Their Population Trend?




Although Grand Cayman Blue iguanas are an endangered species today, there is hope for some optimism, as their population is increasing today.


This means that their population trend is one of increasing.

Although there is room for some optimism for this species of the iguana because their population is increasing, they are also sadly still one of the world's most endangered species, with a very small population.


Today, it is estimated that there are only 443 of these blue iguanas.


What Are Their Habitats?


Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas are found in just a few habitats.


These habitats include:

. marine/coastal habitats


They are found living within these habitats in the wild of the Cayman Islands.


What Threats Do They Face Today?


Blue Iguanas face a few threats today, which puts them at risk of extinction.


Sadly, the main (or at least one of the main threats) to these animals, is that they are killed by other animals - mainly domesticated cats and dogs.


Other threats to these animals include - a loss of their habitat, climate change, agriculture and roads. These threats make the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana at risk of extinction. The good news is, they are not extinct and there is still time to save them from extinction. However, they are also in a vulnerable position and time is running out to save these animals - working to save them today, will help save the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana from extinction.


These beautiful and unique animals deserve to live on this beautiful earth too.
